When I first began building my body of work in 2019, I had one vision: to create a folio blooming with florals and fauna. I was inspired by the lush aesthetic of traditional Malaysian batik, an ancestral craft that first sparked my desire to paint.

Back then, the complexity of flowers intimidated me. I didn’t yet have the confidence to paint them in a way that felt honest.

The calla lily became my entry point. Simple in colour, shape, and form. It gave me a way in. Over the past five years, this flower has appeared again and again. And every single time I paint it, it reflects to me my growth and evolution as a painter.

Creating Temple of Lillies was a way of returning to those simpler beginnings, back to the flower that gave me the confidence to start.
