Ocean Is King
This piece was inspired by my 2020 trip to Hawaii, where I became completely captivated by the monument of Duke Kahanamoku on Waikiki Beach. I photographed it endlessly, knowing this was a figure I’d return to in my art again and again.
It felt like whoever sculpted him wasn’t creating just another decorative landmark. It was art made with intention. You can feel the warmth, the openness, the deep celebration of history and land. Locals place fresh flowers on his outstretched arms daily, and standing before him felt like standing in front of a blessing.
