In 2020, I painted a version of the Duke Kahanamoku statue after visiting Waikiki Beach. I must’ve taken dozens of photos of it during that trip. I knew then it was something I’d want to paint again and again.

This statue represent to me the power of art and what art is about. It was very well thought out by his creator. Everything about this statue feels like perfection to me. It tells a story, hold history, sculpted with care, the way it collaborated with the landscape ,the warm energy it radiates, and also allow people across time to interact with it by placing fresh flowers garland on his outstrected arms every morning.
